THE STATE OF TE ECONOMY
‘IF YOU CAN’T BEAT THEM, JOIN THEM’
THIS IS PRETTY MUCH THE SLOGAN WE HAVE ADOPTED SEEING THAT BLACK SOUTH AFRICANS ECONOMY IS WAY BEHIND AND STRUGGLING, WHILE THE WHITE SOUTH AFRICAN ECONOMY STILL POSSESSES MOST POWER IN THE COUNTRY.
In-spite of the 1994 South African government regime change to democracy, white South Africans, even though in the minority, are still on top of the economic game and are on the helm of the South African economy. They dominate all spheres of industry in South Africa. The black South African masses have been dismally marginalised in the economy. In 1994, black South Africans were thrown a dry bone of political liberation without economic freedom. White South Africans retained the skills and the bulk of the economy. Majority of black South Africans depend on jobs from white South Africans companies for a living, while white South Africans roam the malls and beaches every day, spending money made for them by black South Africans. Black children struggle to get to tertiary institutions to get diplomas and degrees, only to work for white companies. They may be employed as CEOs, COOs, or CFOs, driving fancy cars, but the fact remains they are still under the economic command of white companies, working only for a lively-hood.
Nicky Stein and Riaan van Tonder have led the Meat-cohol down the brightly lit path of opportunities in the highly profitable meat and alcohol industries dominated by the elite white South Africans. In the various subsequent meetings, it was again highlighted that if black South Africans could combine their resources and efforts, due to their vast population, they could take a lead in the economy. But this has failed over many decades as they are divided and full of infighting. Syndication or grouping together is how whites, Indians, and even African foreigners lately, Chinese and other nationals in SA have done to gain control of the economy. These nations have beaten the indigenous black South Africans in their own economy and in their own backyard.
Yes, it is very obvious in every corner of the country, foreigners have taken over the South African economy, and they are gaining more ground every day, taking South African money out of the country to their own countries, escalating inflation. For example, the Somalis – these foreigners have taken over the spaza-shop industry in South Africa. Look how many African nationals run retail shops in every nook and corner of major towns in South Africa. They have even become employers to black South Africans, next to whites and Indians. Black South Africans, in their large numbers as indigenous people and consumers of South Africa, should be making a significant positive impact in all markets of the economy, only if they could consistently pull together their resources for a positive common economic purpose, but they have failed to do this, instead they destroy existing public infrastructure and one another. Other races have used this to their advantage, especially the foreign nationals who are the most recent to arrive in South Africa, coming from very impoverished and conflicted countries.
As MEAT-COHOL, we are interested in getting a bigger piece of the pie in the high revenue turnover of meat and alcohol in South Africa where the black population contributes about 67% of the economy to and get very little or no profit out of. Meat and alcohol are the leading money spinners in South Africa. Meat-cohol is lucky to have been given this rare opportunity by the privileged, and they took the opportunity presented to them with both hands.
Revenue in the Alcoholic Drinks and meat markets amounted to R199,5 billion in the year ending early 2023. The markets are expected to grow annually by 8.50% (CAGR 2023-2027). The market’s largest segment is Beer and red meat with a market volume of billions of rands in 2023.
MEAT-COHOL would like to thank Nicky and Riaan who paved the way to make this empowerment venture a reality. They have provided the right keys for the right doors of economy, which Meat-cohol on their own would not have been able to achieve. Basically, they put wheels on the Meat-cohol wagon to move.
